Is it safe to buy from Temu?

I’ve seen some news about Temu being a scam, like this article: https://nypost.com/2023/08/05/why-the-chinese-shopping-app-is-a-scam/

Now I’m not sure if I should order from there. Have any of you guys bought from Temu? How was your experience?

Temu mostly sells cheap knockoffs. It’s a lot like Wish. Keep in mind, you get what you pay for.

It seems like most people here are focusing on the product quality, but the article you shared is more about privacy concerns. It’s hard to say exactly what data Temu collects and shares, but it’s probably safe to assume they’re passing along something. Personally, I avoid it. I don’t want to give up more of my privacy than I already have. But if your question is about product quality, it’s probably fine. If you’re concerned about your data, you might want to steer clear.

Do you shop on Amazon? I hate to tell you, but a lot of the stuff on Amazon is also from China, just like Temu. The only difference is someone in the US buys it in bulk from Alibaba and then marks it up. Temu is just cutting out the middleman.

I totally agree. The article feels a bit exaggerated and kind of fear-mongering.

When you see $200 items for $4.99 with free shipping, that’s a red flag. They’re cheap knockoffs, no doubt about it.

Yeah, when something is that cheap, it makes me wonder if it’s too good to be true.

I only use their website and PayPal, and I have to say, the shipping was quicker than I expected—just 7 days from order to delivery. With other sites like Wish or AliExpress, I’ve had to wait 3 weeks or more. The quality is better than I thought, though I was ready to be scammed at first.

Temu probably uses air shipping, while others go by sea, which is slower.

I bought a bra from Amazon for $31. Out of curiosity, I checked Temu and found the same bra for $7.29. I ordered it, and when it arrived, it was literally the exact same bra. Even the tags and packaging were the same. You couldn’t tell the difference! So now I use Temu but only with PayPal, just to be safe.

I want to use Temu for small stuff like Croc charms that really shouldn’t be so expensive elsewhere, but I’m worried about my credit card and PayPal security. I’ve heard it’s safer to use the website, not the app. Does anyone know if using the app causes problems with PayPal? I’m thinking about using a prepaid card just in case, but I’m not sure if Temu accepts them. I’ve had issues with some sites not accepting Cash App cards. Any advice?

I overheard someone at the supermarket saying they deleted the Temu app because their friends had their card info stolen. But that person said they didn’t have any issues themselves because they used Apple Pay for their orders. Maybe try using Apple Pay or something similar for extra safety.

I’ve also heard rumors about Temu stealing and selling personal data. Their ads are really over-the-top too. I wouldn’t trust it.

I’ve been shopping with Temu for three years now with no problems at all. The quality is usually pretty good, and some of my friends even thought the things I bought were designer items.
