Is Copart a legitimate website?

Is the website Copart good for buying used cars? They auction off impounded cars when lots are full. Everything I’ve read says they seem legit, but I wanted to get a second opinion.

Many YouTube channels have opted to purchase vehicles through Copart. For those new to the process, it’s generally advised against. Take time to watch informative videos, gain insights, and then decide wisely.

Although Copart is a legitimate company with public stock, the majority of its activity is consigning damaged cars to auction for insurance companies to recover their expenses.
If you are not a mechanic or in need of a project, do not purchase.

The Copart site itself is fine, but the cars can be a significant gamble. Given the high cost of parts and availability issues, I’d advise against choosing something severely damaged. However, if you have the time and expertise to handle the repairs yourself, you should be okay. Just make sure to allocate a substantial contingency in your repair budget.

Copart is widely utilized by part-time car insurance companies for total-loss vehicles. A significant number of these vehicles, perhaps even the majority, are ones where the insurance company determined it was more cost-effective to pay out the car’s value rather than repair it (sometimes due to state law, but often because the damage is extensive). Unless you are a skilled mechanic or know exactly what to look for, I wouldn’t recommend buying from Copart.

Thanks for the advice about Copart. It’s good to know they are a legitimate company but mainly deal with auctioning damaged cars. I’ll definitely avoid purchasing from them unless I’m prepared for a project or have the necessary mechanical skills.
