I ordered a book on Amazon and found a $100 gift card inside... what's the deal?

So I bought an $11 book from Amazon, and when I opened it, there was a $100 gift card inside. This is really weird. I checked the bank associated with the card, but the phone number on the card doesn’t match the one for the bank I found online. I haven’t tried calling either number or activating the card yet. There was nothing else in the package to explain this. Does anyone know if this could be some kind of scam? Or did someone mess up and put it in by accident?

Could this be a return? Someone might have left their $100 gift card inside and now it’s ended up with you?

I ordered it as a new book, and it looks completely untouched.

That’s strange. I haven’t heard of a scam like this before. If you find out more, let us know!

I sell books on Amazon sometimes. Sounds like it could be a third-party seller who accidentally included their own gift card with it. I’d say just keep it and use it if you want. You probably won’t find who it belonged to.

Maybe it’s a return that Amazon resold as new?

If the card hasn’t been activated, it’s probably just a fancy bookmark.

I’ve used old gift cards as bookmarks before, so it could just be that.

Is the gift card from Amazon?

Nope, it’s a Visa gift card.

Do you know if it’s been activated?

I’m worried that trying to activate it might expose me to something risky. The website and phone number on the card don’t match the official info for the bank.

By the way, I love your profile pic!

You might not need to activate it. Just try it next time you’re at the store and see if it works.

Looks like you just scored a free $100!

That’s awesome luck if it works! Hope it’s activated.
