Has anyone else seen a Three Card Monte scam in person?

So I’ve got a fun story from when I was 14. I went to a track meet in Philadelphia called the Penn Relays. I was just a spectator, but one year I had to use the bathroom. Back then, the bathroom was just a big U-shaped trough where everyone did their business at the same time. While I was there, I noticed a guy had set up a Three Card Monte game using a trash can as a table. The cards were bent and there was some object being hidden (maybe a bean or something).

I didn’t have enough money to risk on it, but I stayed and watched for a bit. I could tell it was a scam but I wasn’t sure how it worked. After a round, one guy played, lost $100, and stormed off. It was wild. That was my first time seeing street scams in action, and I’m always cautious when I see one now, even though they’re not as common anymore.

Heads up for new users:

If you posted here, you might start getting private messages from scammers. They’ll tell you they can help get your money back for a small fee. They claim to know hackers or recovery experts, but these are RECOVERY SCAMS. Don’t take advice privately! Always keep it in the comments here so the community can help.

Also, remember the forum rules: no contact info, no insults, no ‘scam the scammer’ posts, and no uncensored gore. Please report any rule-breaking content to help keep things safe.

And people who are just watching sometimes get their wallets pickpocketed by accomplices or others trying to make a quick buck.

I had my hand on my wallet the whole time, so I didn’t get taken.

@Charlotte
Which probably made it easier for them to spot where it was.

I wasn’t nicked though, so I’m good.

I watched a Three Card Monte game in Vegas with my husband (then fiancé) in front of New York, New York Casino. At first, we thought it was just a performance! The ‘plants’ were obvious – a girl who looked a bit off and a teen guy kept winning. Then they got a guy to play and he lost $100. He wisely walked away. We didn’t stick around too long, but I guess if they get even one guy to play and lose $100 every hour, that’s a decent side income for them.

This whole Three Card Monte thing reminds me of the RUN DMC song ‘It’s Tricky.’ I think I’ve seen Penn and Teller do a skit about it too.

I’m shocked that people still fall for this scam. It’s literally the perfect example of a fixed game, and it’s been in movies, books, and shows for ages. It’s crazy to think that it’s still working in touristy spots every day.
