I was contacted by someone claiming to be an FBI agent who said they could help me recover some of my losses from past scams and hackers. They sent me a check for a large amount, but it turned out to be fake. Now, they want to send me a Visa preloaded debit card for $8450, but I have to send $950 first to activate it. Is this a scam or is this for real? What should I do?
Hi BZQ, welcome to the forum. Just so you know, posting here means you might start getting private messages from scammers saying they can help you recover your lost money. These are called recovery scammers, and you should never take advice in private. Always talk to people in the open where others can help watch out for you. If you get messages from strangers offering to recover your money for a fee, that’s a big red flag.
This is definitely a recovery scam. The person you’re talking to is NOT an FBI agent. They are just trying to scam you again. Do not send them any money. The money you’ve lost is gone, but don’t lose more.
It sounds like this ‘FBI agent’ is probably the same person who scammed you in the first place. Don’t trust them!
You already know the answer. It’s not real. This is just a way to waste your time and get karma for asking about it.
They sent you a fake check and you’re still wondering if it’s real? Just disconnect from the internet and phone services. This is definitely a scam.
Did the FBI actually show up at your house? Real agents would meet you in person if they were involved. This isn’t how they operate. Check this link out for more info: https://www.ic3.gov/
Stop talking to these strangers. You’re clearly a vulnerable person who doesn’t understand scams. This is dangerous.
That’s the SAME scammer who tricked you before. They’re just trying to scam you a second time.
What made you think this is real? This is a scam, plain and simple.
This is clearly a scam. Stop believing everything random strangers tell you online.

Hi /u/vinceherman, just a reminder, this is a recovery scam. These scammers will try to convince you that they can help recover your funds, but they’re just out to take more money. They often pretend to be law enforcement or professionals who know how to hack or recover funds, but it’s all a lie. Never give them any personal info or money. If you see someone offering to help you privately, report it to the moderators. This scam is very common, and the best thing to do is block them and be cautious of anyone contacting you after you share your scam experience.
