I applied for a job on governmentjobs.com, and my application status shows that I passed the qualifications check. Now, I’m on the eligible list, and my application has been sent to the department for consideration. I’ve had bad experiences with USAJOBS in the past, so I’m wondering if this is just a dead end or if it might actually lead to something.
This happened a few days ago, so I’m curious if anyone has successfully gotten a job through this site. I also received another job offer, but the government job pays more, so I’d definitely interview for it if given the chance.
I haven’t gotten a job from them yet, but I applied for several positions on both sites. In the end, nothing came through.
My mom works for the government and says the process can take a long time—like 6 to 7 months. You might wait a couple of months just to hear back for a first interview.
This is partly because the HR staff moves slowly, and it’s hard to get fired from a government job. The whole system is just slow.
Edit: I suggest taking the other job while you wait to see if you hear back from the government job. It could take a while, unless you can afford to wait a couple of months for a response.
Thank you for your reply! I’m not surprised by the wait. I’m hoping to hear back before 6 months, but I’m not counting on it, lol. I’ve applied for a lot of jobs on USAJobs and haven’t heard anything back. I hope this one doesn’t completely ignore me, but I’m definitely going to take the other job because I don’t want to rely on this one if it doesn’t work out. I’m also hoping it’ll be faster since it’s local government, but who knows?
I’ve applied several times but have only received rejections or no response. One time, I got a notice saying I was turned down for a job because I didn’t send in my transcripts on time, but I had uploaded them and attached them to my application. I never got a warning about needing my transcripts or a deadline. (The notice was from govtjobs, not the employer.)
I’m starting to wonder about how well the site works and if it’s easy for hiring managers to use. But I’m not sure—maybe others have had better luck.
I have applied for several jobs through that site. I’ve had several interviews and recently accepted a position with a city near Seattle. There’s usually a first stage review of applications by H.R. who then pass on the applications that meet their eligibility requirements (education and experience, any certifications). Once the hiring manager gets the stack of applications, they score them to see who they want to interview. They can be really quick or really slow, it just depends on the department. And anywhere from two days to two weeks later you’ll get notified if they want to interview you. Sometimes there’s a brief initial screening interview of 10 or so candidates, then they select 4 or so for a more in depth interview. Offer usually comes a week to 2 weeks after.
Yay! I like that you can input all the information from your resume, all your education, certifications, everything and just update it as needed. It makes applying to a bunch of different positions so easy.
On the job duties summary part of the application, do you suggest using bullet points or writing out sentences? We have to attach our resume, where my relevant work experience is bulleted.
I was recently asked to take a written exam for an administrative job with the city. Has anyone done these exams before? There’s no information about what will be on the exam. Do you have any suggestions or tips on what I should expect?
