Am I about to get scammed? Buyer keeps pushing for a VIN report

Hey everyone, I’m dealing with a buyer who’s really aggressive and keeps demanding that I provide a VIN report from a website they sent me. I’m starting to feel like this could be a scam. What do you all think?

Just a heads up, you’re likely going to get some private messages from people pretending to be recovery experts offering to help you for a fee. Don’t fall for it. If you need advice, stick to the open forum where everyone can see it and provide input. Private messages can be a breeding ground for scams.

It sounds like the website they’re pushing is a phishing scam. Block the buyer and stop engaging with them. Remember, as the seller, you set the terms!

That site they want you to use is fake. It’s just a way to steal your credit card information. Don’t fall for it.

Be careful with these kinds of scams. If you’re selling a vehicle, the scammer may ask you to pay for a report on a website they control. If they refuse a legitimate report like Carfax, it’s a big red flag. Always use trusted sources if you’re going to provide any reports, and never pay for something they demand.

Just so you all know, I didn’t actually pay for the report. I told them I did just to see how they’d react.

Good move! That saved you from a big headache with fraudulent charges.

They would have charged you for a fake report and stolen your credit card info, too. If they want a VIN report, they should get it themselves. Most of the time, these requests are scams.

Nice one! Ignore my earlier comment, haha.

I came here just to make sure you didn’t pay that site! These scams are getting way too creative.

This is a really common scam. They’re not interested in your car at all. They’re just trying to get your money and personal info. Anyone can run a VIN report, so the fact they’re asking you to use their specific site is suspicious.

Luckily the OP didn’t actually buy the report—they just pretended to.

Glad to hear! Some of these scammy websites are also set up to give the scammer a referral fee every time someone clicks on their link. Even if they’re only making a little bit each time, it can add up if they send out hundreds of messages a day.

They want you to use their website so they can steal your credit card details. Also, they’re not actually planning to buy your vehicle. Just block them and move on.

This is a very common scam. They try to get you to pay for a VIN check on a fake site they control. Either the site will take your money and give you nothing, or they’ll steal your credit card info. They have no real interest in your vehicle. If they refuse a legitimate service like Carfax, it’s definitely a scam.

Sometimes these scammers even get paid a commission if you click through their fake site and sign up for a service like TransUnion. They’re just trying to make money from as many people as possible.

Yeah, they’ve got a script they follow to convince you to sign up for their bogus site. They may even say they don’t trust Carfax just to make you think you need to use their service.

Thanks for explaining! I’ll keep that in mind for the future.

We really need an automod for these VIN scams. Even though it’s covered by the !car automod, sometimes sellers just need the info without all the extra stuff about scams.
