My cousin used to do something similar with a gas card her dad paid for. She wasn’t on drugs, just lazy and wanted quick cash.
Sounds like he needed cash and couldn’t get it any other way. But yeah, most places make you pay first, so I’m not sure how he’d pull this off without cooperation.
He offers to pay with his card and makes it seem like a win-win. It’s 100% a stolen card.

Maybe he was just trying to help out? As long as you didn’t give him cash or your info, you’re probably safe. But yeah, if it was a stolen card, that would explain it.

Definitely a scam. He would’ve taken whatever cash you gave him for a full tank and been gone.
